COMMENTS

The pattern on this page was introduced on the 1st January, 1949 and remains in use today (2006 ). The pattern included specific flags to be used if the lines needed to be extended. It is possible that this change may have occured as part of the desire to have all allied navies use a common signal flag system. At some time during the 1970's the flags were changed to fluorescent colours.

Because of the array of Radar and other aerials now fitted to naval vessels, many ships are unable to dress fully. See the photo below of HMAS Stuart in 1988.

Flags Sizes ( As ammended in 1949 )

Cruisers and above: Size 3
Other ships: Size 4

Flag Spacing on Lines:

Flags should be spaced 2ft 6in apart. To prevent gaps at the end the distance may be varied

Fore-Down lines are to end at the top with the Guide Flag
Main-Down to end with the Speed Flag.
Station Flag is always to be at the fore end of the Fore-Down line
