COMMENTS

The first official Admiralty Flag pattern was introduced in 1889. Prior to this it was up to the junior officer to come up with any pattern he liked as long as it was pleasing to the eye

As no official pattern for this period has been located I have put together the above diagram based on photos of the time.The green Flags and Pennants indicate those flags that are not yet identified.

Although an official pattern existed for this period I have found several photos of ships that appeared to be still wearing "Home Made" patterns.

A photo was found of the Royal Yacht "Victoria and Albert" in 1899 wearing the pattern of the next period so it may be that 1898 was the last year of this pattern.
